Accelerated Reader

The purpose of the Accelerated Reader is not to provide reading instruction. Rather, its purpose is to help motivate students to read more books at an appropriate level of difficulty by using a point system tied to individual goals. By usinga a computer-based reading and management system designed to supplement existing classroom literacy programs for grades 1-6, students are motivated to read advanced level books and to increase their personal reading time.

Prizes are awarded based on the number of points a child accumulates. Prizes range from pencils to tote bags.

Once the students have completed their reading, they take a computerized test to determine their scores. The test scores are determined by a complicated formula which takes into account the level of reading difficulty and the number of words included in the piece of reading undertaken. The two aforementioned factors and the points assigned to a book will determine a child's score.
